Cultural Connections in Jamaica

Jamaica is known to be a very diverse country. Their motto "Out of Many - One People "explains it all when it comes to the many different ethnic groups that helped influence Jamaican culture. African influence is included in Jamaican culture.

The language includes words like "nyam" which means to eat, and "jook, meaning to poke which are contributed from Africa. Some of Jamaica's popular dishes like cow foot, goat head soup, chicken foot, and oxtail all come from a time where the poorest class in society would want to make sure they ate every last bit that was provided for dinner.

Jamaica has cultural influences from Britain and Ireland. Jamaican names like white, green,  and smith are British. The European influence also include Scottish and Irish surnames. The Irish is known as the largest ethnic group in Jamaica at 25%. Digicel is an Irish owned communications company that is very well known on the island.

South Asians and East  Asians are also a part of the Jamaican culture.  Chinese is known to have the strongest influence of all East Indians. In 1509 to 1655 Jamaica was called Santiago, which was a colony of Spain. When it comes to the Spanish influence a lot of common names in Spain are well known in Jamaica and soccer aka football is a popular sport in Jamaica.

  1. Hi Makeda, Jamaica sounds like a very interesting country! I find it fascinating that South Asians and East Asians are also apart of Jamaican culture. I also like that you neatly set your sources so I can see the information! Can't wait to see what else you post!

You had a good hook here. It got me interested and immersed right from the get go while also giving me a little insight into the topic already. The information you presented was ok but I felt like you could have gone alot more in depth. It seems that you started to go in a good direction and then just cut it short. If you expanded more and went a bit more in depth I feel like this could be alot better.
