My research paper is on what exactly sparked the development of the Rastafarian culture in Jamaica. Throughout my paper I touched on several topics including the history of the colonization of Africa and Ethiopia. European powers that divided African slaves and suppression of the African culture into areas of captivity also known as "Babylon". In the 1930's the Rastafarian movement was born. This movement began following a prophecy made by Marcus Garvey. Marcus Garvey powerful speech preached to look at Africa where king shall be crowned, and he shall be the redeemer. This set the foundation of the Rastafarian movement, but the religion takes its name from Haile Selassie original name. Haile Selassie was known as several names. The term Rastafari is from the word Ras , which is an Amharic word that means head and Tafari was the first name of Emperor Haile Selassie.
