Introduction to Research Paper

My research paper is on what exactly sparked the development of the Rastafarian culture in Jamaica. Throughout my paper I touched on several topics including the history of the colonization of Africa and Ethiopia. European powers that divided African slaves and suppression of the African culture into areas of captivity also known as "Babylon".

In the 1930's the Rastafarian movement was born. This movement began following a prophecy made by Marcus Garvey. Marcus Garvey powerful speech preached to look at Africa where king shall be crowned, and he shall be the redeemer.  This set the foundation of the Rastafarian movement, but the religion takes its name from Haile Selassie original name. Haile Selassie was known as several names.

The term Rastafari is from the word Ras , which is an Amharic word that means head and Tafari was the first name of Emperor Haile Selassie. The word Ras is also a title similar to a chief or a prince in Ethiopia and Tarari means the one who is adored or worshiped.  The term Jah Rastafari is the embodiment of the God the Father and a second coming of Jesus Christ.

Marcus Garvey had issues with the teachings of Selassie. Garvey did not think that Selassie was a great leader. Garvey wrote an editorial titled " The failure of Haile Selassie as the Emperor. Rastafarians felt fulfillment from Marcus Garvey prophecy and recognizes Marcus Garvey as the foundation of the culture. Teachings continued of the Rastafarian beliefs through Haile Selassie I. These beliefs were a mixture of Jamaican and Ethiopian culture. Rastafarians accept the Bible but do believe messages have been manipulated and polluted by man.

The European brought over diseases that took over the Arawaks and they had no chance of survival. They first settled in St.Ann's Bay. Spanish town was the only town that was developed also known as the old capital of Jamaica which is now called St. Jago de la Vega. This was the center of trade and also had many convents and churches. In 1655 The english led a successful attack on the Spaniards in Jamaica. The Slaves were freed and the S...
